Accelerated Reader

The Accelerated Reader program at Bear Creek Community Charter School is for students in grades first through eighth.

Accelerated Reader is a computerized program that helps teachers manage and monitor children's independent reading practice. Your child picks a book at their reading level and reads it at their own pace. When finished, your child can take a short quiz on the computer. By taking this quiz and answering comprehension questions, we are able to see if they comprehend what they are reading.

The Accelerated Reader website for our school is https://hosted153.renlearn.com/2103125/

Accelerated Reader Points and Goals

Every book in Accelerated Reader is given a point value. The point value is computed based on the difficulty of the book (reading level or book level) and the length of the book (number of words). The teacher sets the student's individual goal each marking period. Accelerated Reader keeps track of the student's reading practice toward their goal and communicates it to parents and teachers. Accelerated Reader also provides diagnostic reports on student difficulties for teachers.

How Do We Choose Books To Read?

Selecting the right books for children to read is easier than ever by using Accelerated Reader Book Find. With just a few clicks, parents can search for titles at the appropriate reading level. This book find process will also help children find books that they will find interesting and enjoyable. The online software allows students and parents to search for book titles based upon authors, topics, or titles of books. More information can be found at http://www.arbookfind.com/

Incentives and Rewards

We are going to motivate the students to read independently as much as possible. Students earn 1 raffle ticket for reaching their goal. Students earn 1 additional raffle ticket for each 50% they go above their goal. There will be one raffle per grade level. Winner gets a Barnes and Noble gift card.

Questions, Comments, or Concerns?

First, talk to your child's teacher! The teacher will be able to give you information about your child's reading goal, a report on how they are doing with meeting their goal, or will be willing to share ideas on how to get your child motivated and more interested in reading. Your child's teacher will also be able to suggest books that may be most appropriate for your child.
